Candidate Statements

candidateElizabeth Hall, MD FAAEM
Candidate for President
Nominated By: David D. Vega, MD

Candidate Statement: I am interested in running for the position of president of AAEM YPS. I agree with the belief that the future of emergency medicine depends on restoring control of our practice to emergency physicians. I feel that it is important to support the welfare, education and practice environments of emergency physicians.

As a resident, I showed my support to AAEM by remaining an active member of AAEM/RSA. I served two terms on the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors: one as vice president and one as an at-large member, serving as the membership chair. During that time, I understood the importance of the development of a Young Physicians Section and served as the co-chair of the Young Physicians Section Task Force and later as the resident liaison to the Young Physicians Section.

As a physician, I have remained active in AAEM. I have served three years on the YPS Board, one year as an at-large member, one year as the secretary/treasurer, and last year as vice president. As vice president, I assisted the president on various tasks but specifically worked to improve the mentoring program of YPS.

I have a strong interest in helping with the growth of the Young Physicians Section and would like to remain actively involved with this section’s leadership. Through the YPS we have a voice to help each other in our individual careers while protecting the future of emergency medicine as a specialty.

Candidate Statement: For the past year it has been my pleasure serving on the AAEM/YPS Board of Directors as secretary/treasurer. We have accomplished a great deal over this time. One of the activities I enjoyed preparing for the most and seeing the success of, was our YPS lecture series at Scientific Assembly. We obtained a great line up of accomplished and successful speakers who delivered amazing, educational talks pertaining to key issues for our members. One of our latest endeavors was having our members complete an extensive survey to find out what was important to them. After analyzing the data, we are working on new member services and events to better address their needs. The progress we made as a board over the past year is what drives me to continue my work within AAEM and to seek re-election to the AAEM YPS Board of Directors.

I have always enjoyed being part of AAEM. Throughout residency I served on the AAEM/RSA board as communications chair. This role allowed me to redesign the website and provide more educational opportunities for our members. Also throughout my time, I wrote multiple articles for Common Sense, helped revise Rules of the Road and promoted the AAEM board review book. Apart from AAEM, I am happy to report I have completed my first year out as a new attending and accomplished writing a protocol manual to help standardize the EMS care in India through my international fellowship. Given my interest in academics, I am now half way through my second fellowship in academic EM at the Stanford/Kaiser emergency medicine program. This allowed me to put together a board review curriculum for the residents, help provide more feedback to our residents and assist in interviews for our upcoming intern class.

I seek re-election to the AAEM/YPS Board of Directors to continue utilizing AAEM to advance emergency medicine and provide new resources to its members and support to its youngest physicians.

candidateMichael Tang, MD FAAEM
Candidate for Vice President
Self-Nomination

Candidate Statement: I’m an emergency medicine physician from NY, looking to serve as vice president on the 2012 YPS Board. I was born in Northampton, MA. After attending MIT and then graduating from Yale medical school, I moved to NY to train as a resident at LIJ (NS-LIJ system). During my first three years after graduating from residency, I’ve worked more than 2,000 hours per year in the trenches at a community hospital, SUNY Downstate Medical Center University Hospital at LICH. Since 2009, I’ve volunteered to give practice cases in national oral board courses, designed to help make the board certification process less traumatic for recent graduates from residency.

I have a passion for continuing to help vitalize the AAEM YPS. I will draw on my experience as a member of the AAEM and ACEP YPS steering committee since 2010, during which time I have participated in conferences, as well as helped to co-chair round table discussions at the 2010 and 2011 Leadership & Advocacy Conferences in Washington, D.C.

I have a vision of an energetic AAEM YPS board, pursuing a variety of new directions for YPS members.

Thanks,
Mike Tang

candidateMichael A. Ybarra, MD
Candidate for Secretary-Treasurer
Self-Nomination

Candidate Statement: Hello! My name is Michael Ybarra, and being an active member of AAEM has been important to me since my second year in medical school. I have worked my way through the organization, first on the medical student council, then as an RSA board member and president, and I’m happy to be a member of the YPS board of directors now.

I hope to continue my involvement in YPS next year so I can stay on as the government affairs committee chair. Health policy and advocacy is one of my greatest interests and over the past year I’ve worked with Kathi Ream, AAEM’s Government Affairs Director to better coordinate our advocacy and outreach.

In the next year, my goal is to see through a YPS co-sponsored Capitol Hill event and work to strengthen our alert network at the state level to catch important legislation that might change corporate practice of medicine statutes and impact our ability to practice medicine in a fair environment.

Thank you for your support and I hope to work with many of you in the future!

Candidate Statement: After transitioning to the AAEM/YPS board from RSA, I was privileged to serve as education chair this past year. This upcoming year, I again hope to continue my service to AAEM through a YPS leadership position. After wrapping up a half decade of resident education, I have transitioned to an academic job and am excited to help provide guidance to others along similar journeys. Education, leadership and advocacy have been foci of my medical career to date. As a new section, YPS is evolving to guide and mentor young physicians. Recent board focus has included a membership survey; the results of which I hope to use to continue the planning of a CME/mixer event for YPS members. By continuing to utilize my connections within my own residency as well as RSA, I would like to maximize teamwork for excellent educational initiatives and benefits. Excellence in continued medical education is crucial for recent graduates. Collaboration with RSA for the Scientific Assembly is but a first step in what can be done. Throughout the next year, I hope to continue to expand this partnership in educational endeavors as well as continue to promote the AAEM cornerstone of board certification in emergency medicine as fundamental to high quality emergency care for all.

Nomination Statement: Thanks to all of you who are taking the time to read these statements and elect another YPS Board of Directors. Once again I ask for your vote to serve another year on a member of the YPS BOD and continue to advocate for the young physicians in AAEM.

During this past year I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the board. As chair of the communications committee I feel we published some great articles this year in Common Sense and kept our section members up to date with what YPS was working on. I am thrilled that we continue to increase our Facebook fan base, and I think we have room to grow the Facebook page into a major resource for members. Again this year YPS has continued to expand our CV cover letter review service, and I am impressed with all the talented young physicians whose CV’s I have reviewed. Our specialty continues to benefit from the top-notch physicians who choose to practice emergency medicine.

Having been out of residency now for over a year, when I look back at the lessons learned since graduation I am blown away by the amount of knowledge we gain AFTER we have been trained in emergency medicine. I believe that YPS members should use one another to help spread this knowledge and wisdom gained, which is why the YPS BOD have been working on expanding the YPS mentoring service this year. We have made some strides, but we still have a ways to go to effectively reach all the new grads out there. I ask all the YPS members with a few years and lessons under their belts to sign up for the mentoring service. Our new grads are eager to learn, we could always use more mentors.

I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to serve our AAEM members for the past 3 years, as a member the YPS BOD for the past 2 years, and as an RSA Board Member in 2009. AAEM continues to work for our members and I am honored to be a part of the process. I once again ask for your vote so that I may continue to work on our members’ behalf and do my part to keep AAEM a strong advocate for emergency physicians.

Candidate Statement: As a recent residency graduate and current practicing EM physician I am grateful for AAEM and the guidance and resources they provide. In my current leadership role in a democratic group at a large community hospital I have unique insight to the challenges facing many of our members who practice in the community setting.

As a board member I would ensure that focus remains toward the following objectives:

  1. Outreach and guidance to residents and recent resident graduates.
  2. Promotion of democratically physician owned emergency groups and the benefits of accessible emergency care on a state and national level.
  3. Ensuring that board certified emergency physicians are prepared for the upcoming federal changes to health care oversight and payment.
  4. Developing the future leaders of emergency medicine.

Candidate for At-Large Board Member

Candidate Statement: For the past three years I have been fortunate enough to be an active member of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Resident and Student Association. I was elected treasurer/ secretary of the AAEM/RSA committee last year. Prior to that, I was chair of the AAEM/RSA membership committee and a member of the education committee.

Last year a new pocketbook known as the AAEM/RSA Emergency Medicine Survival Guide was created by myself and Dr. Joel Schofer to provide for new AAEM/RSA members. It was greatly successful and I have been told by many residents what a great resource this is to have while working in the ED.

Being a part of AAEM has been an honor and it has allowed me to grow into a more rounded and involved emergency physician. I believe I can use my experience to help the AAEM/YPS grow and succeed, and I look forward to working on a team with others who share the same dedication as well as core vision of the AAEM/YPS membership.
